How to Fix Outlook on Exchange Constantly Asking for Password

In this guide, I will show you how to eliminate the constant pop-up screen prompting you to enter your password for your Exchange account. I will present you with possible solutions that can resolve the issue. Unlike other guides that may include unnecessary information, I will focus on practical solutions that are most likely to work.

Remove Saved Passwords from Windows Credential Manager

Outlook typically attempts to synchronize every 30 minutes. It checks the cached credentials stored in the Windows Credential Manager. We will remove these credentials to ensure that no incorrect information is saved

  1. Go to the Control Panel. Make sure “Large icons” is selected, and then click on Credential Manager.

2. Now select Windows Credentials.

3. Under Generic Credentials, you’ll find all the saved passwords. Now, remove any password entries that contain “Outlook.”

You can do this by expanding the entry and then clicking Remove.

4. A pop-up will appear with the message, “Are you sure you want to permanently delete this generic credential?” Click Yes.

Note: Some systems have additional security measures, such as locking the account for 15 minutes after three unsuccessful login attempts. If incorrect passwords are cached in Windows, it could lead to your account being blocked since Outlook continuously synchronizes with Exchange. Be sure to check that your account is not locked in Active Directory as well.

Remove the Outlook Profile in Windows and Create a New One.

It’s possible for the profile to become corrupted, leading to various issues. In this step, we will delete the existing profile and create a new one. Don’t worry, your emails will not be lost.

  1. Go to Control Panel, select Large Icons, and then click on Mail (Microsoft Outlook).

2. Then click on Show Profiles.

3. Now you will see a list of Outlook profiles. Select the profile and click on Remove.

If you have multiple profiles, remove those as well.

Once again, your emails will not be deleted since they are stored on the Exchange server. We will reload the emails shortly.

4. Microsoft provides the following message: “Careful, if you remove this profile, offline cached content for its accounts will be deleted. Learn how to make a backup for the offline .ost files for the account. Do you want to continue?”

Click “Yes.”

5. Now we will create a new profile.

Click on Add.
Then, enter a name and click OK.

6. Then click on: Manual setup or additional server types.

7. Then click on: Exchange ActiveSync.

Now enter the details for the Exchange Server. You will also need to provide the domain account of the respective user.

Then click on Next.

It will then synchronize with the Exchange server. Once this is complete, start Outlook.

When Outlook starts, it will synchronize the emails from the Exchange server, and your emails will return to your inbox.

3. Then select “Never” for “Put the computer to sleep

If you have a laptop, you will have more options. In any case, select “Never” for “Put the computer to sleep” when the laptop is plugged into the power supply.

4. Now we will adjust the power options for the network card.

Open Control Panel and then click on Network and Sharing Center.

5. Next, click on Change adapter settings.

6. Then, right-click on the Ethernet network adapter and click on Properties.

7. Then click on Configure.

8. Then go to the Power Management tab and deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

One possible reason for issues with Outlook is that it may not be up to date with the latest patches. The latest updates from Microsoft can help resolve potential problems with Outlook.

2. Then click on Account in the bottom left corner.

There is an option in Outlook that can cause the password prompt to appear constantly. We will make sure that this option is turned off.

1. Click on File in the upper left corner.
Then click on Account Settings and again on Account Settings.

2. Select the email account and then click on Change.

3. Then click on More Settings.
